When I was growing up our home had a sliding glass door that led out to a back deck. I called it the “monster” door because it was so heavy, hard to move and rumbled and squealed like a freight train on rusty tracks. The door had a thick aluminum frame in the only color available (“aluminum”) and glass that fogged up when it was humid and iced over – on the inside – all winter long.
But, despite the fact that she had to use two hands to open it, my Mom loved that door. It offered a big, wide view of the deck and the yard beyond, and she enjoyed sitting at the kitchen table and just staring out.
Fast forward to today and the benefits of a sliding glass door remain the same, but without the problems of weight, noise and clunky operation. The sliding patio doors we install here at Rescom have replaced bulky aluminum with frames made from rigid, durable vinyl composite that offer the same strength at half the the weight. The door slides easily and virtually silently, with just a gentle push instead of a muscular tug.
The biggest upgrade, however, has been in the glass. Each of our patio doors features multiple pane glass sandwiched around a sealed chamber of inert gas that creates a thermal barrier against heat and cold. Even on the coldest winter days the inside remains warm to the touch, with no frost or condensation. That also means no heat escaping, so monthly heating and cooling costs are lower.
And the view out into the yard is still fantastic.
