According to the FBI, there were nearly eight million property crimes in this country in 2016. The most common points of entry were windows and patio doors. Because patio doors are typically not as durable and sturdy as front entry doors, they are often more vulnerable to attack. There are ways you can ensure your patio doors stay safe and secure to protect your family.
Apply Privacy Film
Sliding patio doors are essentially large windows that give burglars a clear view of what is inside. Unless you want to remove anything of value from that room, it’s a wise idea to keep them from seeing inside in the first place. Try applying privacy film to protect your valuables from prying eyes. They’re easy to apply and leave no residue behind when you remove them. Bonus: you don’t have to install drapes or curtains.
A related solution is to apply a glass protection film, which is comprised of a transparent polyester material that strengthens your sliding glass door so it becomes basically shatter-proof. By adding this reinforcement, you can ensure your door will withstand repeated, violent blows. A burglar would have to work pretty hard to shatter the glass and get inside.
Securing the Door
Patio doors are inherently vulnerable because of their sliding mechanisms and all that glass. Many come with flimsy locks, so it’s up to you upgrade at the point of order or ensure your doors already come with the best locks on the market. For example, our Bristol patio doors come with a Quattro-IV four-point locking system, featuring two steel locking bars that bolt into steel receivers in both the head and sill. You also get an additional keyed security and ventilation lock.
As a backup security measure, you can also place a wooden dowel into the sliding door track which will keep the door in place even if someone manages to get past the lock. It’s old-school, but it works.
If your home is already wired for a security alarm, it’s not too much trouble to wire your patio door into the system. It’s no substitute for a good lock, but it will let you know immediately when security has been breached.
