Living in New England has many benefits, not the least of which is the prevalence of beautiful residential architecture. From historic to modern, the home you choose reflects your unique style. Your home’s windows contribute to the overall look, so be sure to choose the right ones in order to stay true to the style.
Here are three window styles that can complement your home’s traditional architecture in New England:
Double hung: Ideal for Georgian-style homes, double hung windows provide clean lines punctuated by symmetrical features. Traditional double hung are the most common, but other good choices include circular or oval styles. Choose complementary trim colors that match your home to bring the whole look together. Double-hung windows have two sashes that move up and down so you can get ventilation on the top, bottom or both. These are an ideal choice for rooms that look out onto farmer’s porches, walkways and decks.
Casement: You’ll find casement windows on lots of Victorian homes, which boast many elegant features, textures and unusual window styles. Awnings and double hung windows also go well with Victorian homes as a complement to the unique architectural focal points of this type of architecture. Offering top to bottom ventilation, casement windows open outward to either left or right, perfect for above kitchen sinks to let in fresh air.
Bay or bow windows: While these windows are great for just about any style of home, you’ll want to take a look at the overhang of your home’s architecture before deciding on this type. There are some differences between the two. Bay windows feature two windows on either side of a larger picture window, protruding outward from the home. Bow windows comprise four to six windows that also jut outward but resemble more of a rounded appearance, with all windows being the same size. These windows are ideal for living rooms where space is somewhat limited, as the extension of these windows offers the perception of more living space. You can also add a window seat or shelf, further complementing the New England style.
